Why Koh Phangan Surprised Me

Now for the part I wish I did not have to write. My time at Mae Haad Bay was wonderful, but the hotel I stayed at, Mae Haad Bay Resort, delivered one of the worst checkout experiences of my travel life. Consider this my honest resort review.
The Towel Scam
At checkout the staff suddenly claimed we had lost two towels. We had returned exactly two towels per room, precisely what we were given, yet they insisted we owed 850 baht per towel. There was no missing towel. The math did not add up, and neither did their story.
When we pushed back politely and explained that we had returned everything, the staff became rude and dismissive. It felt less like a genuine mistake and more like a deliberate attempt to squeeze extra money out of guests who were on a tight ferry schedule.
Holding Our Luggage and Transfer Hostage
Here is where it crossed a serious line. The resort refused to take us to the ferry port on time unless we paid their invented charge. Our prearranged transfer suddenly stalled, and they effectively held our luggage and our ride hostage until we handed over the money like a ransom.
With a ferry to catch and no easy alternative, we were cornered into paying just to leave. That is not a hospitality mistake. That is coercion, and it left a sour taste after an otherwise beautiful stay on the bay.
My Advice on This Resort
I cannot in good conscience recommend Mae Haad Bay Resort. If you do choose to stay, photograph every towel and item when you check in and again when you return them, and refuse to pay any invented charge.
