Our 30 Day Australia Road Trip from Melbourne to Brisbane

Embarking on a 30-day, 2800-kilometer road trip across Australia offers an unparalleled adventure through diverse landscapes, cultural hubs, and unforgettable experiences. This journey, starting from Melbourne and winding through Canberra, Chippendale, Port Macquarie, Queensland, Brisbane, Emerald Beach, and finally Sydney, presents a unique way to explore the vastness and variety of Australia. Our family of four spent the entire month in a van with Michelle’s mom, dad and brother. We’ll recap the epic journey for you, as it was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

I’ll expand each city in greater detail in subsequent posts so you have a better understanding of the things you can see and do in each city and why we chose the length of stays as we did.

Day 1-6: Melbourne to Canberra

Melbourne, the starting point, is a vibrant metropolis known for its lively arts scene, cafe culture, and lush gardens. Spend a couple of days exploring the city’s laneways, art galleries, and enjoying its renowned coffee culture and delectable food delights.

Moving on, the drive to Canberra, Australia’s capital, takes you through charming rural landscapes. Canberra, with its array of museums, galleries, and national monuments, is a city steeped in Australian history and culture. The Australian War Memorial and the National Gallery of Australia are must-visits.

Day 7-10: Canberra to Chippendale

The journey to Chippendale in Sydney offers a chance to experience urban Australia. Chippendale is a creative hub, home to contemporary art galleries and an emerging dining scene. The White Rabbit Gallery, known for its collection of Chinese contemporary art, is a highlight.

Day 11-15: Chippendale to Port Macquarie

From Chippendale, head north to Port Macquarie, a coastal town known for its stunning beaches, wildlife, and outdoor activities. Spend time relaxing on the beaches, visiting the Koala Hospital, and enjoying coastal walks.

Day 16-17: Port Macquarie to Queensland

The drive to Queensland is a scenic one, with the Pacific Ocean as your backdrop. Queensland, known as the “Sunshine State,” offers a plethora of attractions – from the stunning beaches of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast to the lush rainforests of Daintree.

Day 18-19: Queensland to Brisbane

Next, head to Brisbane, Queensland’s vibrant capital. This city is known for its lively music scene, sprawling parks, and interesting cultural sites like the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.

Day 20-24: Brisbane to Emerald Beach

From Brisbane, travel down to Emerald Beach. This small coastal village is a perfect place to unwind. Known for its pristine beaches and serene atmosphere, it’s a great spot for surfing, fishing, and spotting kangaroos at dawn and dusk.

Day 25-30: Emerald Beach to Sydney

Finally, make your way back to Sydney. Australia’s largest city is famous for its iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Spend your last days exploring the city’s diverse neighborhoods, relaxing on Bondi Beach, and perhaps catch a show at the Opera House.
